In 1824, a tea plant brought to Ceylon by the British from China was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya.

Ceylon green tea is linked with the very first experiments in tea cultivation and manufacture made on the island with China tea seedlings.

Ceylon Gunpowder tea is manufactured in the Chinese tradition of rolling the leaf into a small round pellet.

The name is derived from its resemblance to grains of gunpowder.
